The Fellowship of Friends & Fitness

About a year & a half to 2 years ago, I invited a small handful of ladies to come to my house in the mornings to exercise with me.  Why?  Because otherwise I wouldn't exercise at all... I'm lazy, what can I say.  :o)  They'd show up all bleary-eyed (some worse than others) and we'd pop in a DVD.  Sometimes the DVD would be fairly mild with a happy-go-lucky, always-smiling-through-the-sweat instructor who we named "Debbie Dimples".  Another DVD involved this way too serene yoga dude wearing an outfit that should NOT be worn out in public lest he be arrested for indecent... um... hmm... not going there, but you get the picture (try erasing THAT from your mental image!).  And other times when we were feeling like getting a verbal whipping, we'd pop in "Jillian"... not just a verbal whipping, but a good ol' fashioned butt-kicking as well!

This daily hour that we ladies shared together was, yes, about exercising... but what we more importantly gained was a time of fellowship, friendship, fun and laughter... LOTS of laughter!  It's amazing the things that are funny when you're deliriously worn out!

This morning-time ritual with my friends will always be a precious memory to me.  I thank God for them and what all that fun and fitness led to...

Fast forward to now... some of those same ladies plus a few newer ladies have joined me in my home for that same kind of fellowship, friendship and fun.  The difference is... there's no DVD to pop in.  Instead, I have the privilege of leading them in exercise.  Sometimes I can pull off a sweet "Debbie Dimples"; other times I can get a little more... how shall I say... loudly motivational and become a "Jillian".  But mark my word... I will NEVER be the serene yoga dude wearing a shiny white skin-tight unitard!

My point?  Exercise doesn't have to be boring, dull and grueling... something that you'll give up before you even get started.  Find yourself a group of ladies and have fun!  And may your fitness time be full of fellowship and friendship!

Skinny Genes

There's a difference between being thin and being fit.  I have always been on the normal to thin side.  I have never had much of a weight issue (Shh, I can hear you "booing" me already!).  BUT, I wasn't healthy or fit.  I was a lazy bum who just happened to inherit "skinny genes" from my family.  I was never athletic... in fact, I wear grade school scars from always being picked last for a game of kickball during recess.  I hated high school P.E.  because I wasn't good at anything... including dressing out in front of a bunch of other girls in the locker room who happened to have already blossomed... and at 43, I'm STILL waiting for that "blessing"!  So, being thin sometimes has absolutely nothing to do with being healthy or fit.  So the next time you see a girl with "skinny genes" on... don't be jealous of her or even hate her... because she more than likely has her own issues to carry just like we all do.  Focus on yourself, instead of on her, at becoming the healthy and fit person that God has called you to be.  What an added blessing you can be to others when you are in better health!  Can I encourage you to start today -- right where you are -- and take it day by day at becoming more active and fit?  Blessings and smiles to you all! ~ Tonya  :o)

I Would Have Fallen in the Shower had it Not Been for this Class

And I quote, "I slipped in the shower this morning; and had it not been for this exercise class, I think I would have fallen!"  Well, I'm not sure I'll take full credit for her not falling... it was more than likely the Grace of God that kept her from falling on her wet fanny!  However, to explain her funny-to-hear comment:  The ladies who attend classes in my home get a full-body 45-minute workout that includes several different elements... including BALANCE exercises.  As we get older, it gets easier and easier to lose our balance and fall.  Bumps and bruises... scrapes and scratches... broken bones... twisted ankles, etc.  I for one don't want to be laid up for several days or weeks with an injury... so I've been developing my core muscles and my focus on balance to hopefully help prevent too many falls later on in life.  [SIDE NOTE CONFESSION: I tripped UP the steps last December and it took 5 months to heal.  My classes teach balance, NOT "how to not be clumsy"!]  :o)

If I Throw Up on Your Floor...

And I quote, "If I throw up on your floor [while we're exercising] it's because I'm a few weeks pregnant.  But don't worry, I'll clean it up, and get right back to it."  I dearly love my workout buddies who join me in my home for exercise classes... and you just never know what they'll say next.  :o)  In the next few days, I'll be reminiscing and sharing with you some of the the funny things that have been said!  Stay tuned for more!

Blob to Blog

3 1/2 years ago, I would have never dreamed that I would be strappin' on my purple shoes to have my second of two exercise classes in my home in one day!  But that's exactly what I'm doing.  I have gone from a lethargic, couch-potato blob to now writing a blog about my adventures as a fitness motivator and encourager for women of all shapes, sizes and fitness levels!  For those ladies who are able to attend my classes in my home, we have so much fun!  For those who are not within reach of my home, I hope these posts will encourage you to not give up on getting in better shape!  Come back each day for a little wit and wisdom as I share my excitement and insight.
